Luke Skywalker: “I can’t believe it”

Master Yoda: “That is why you fail.”

Yes, I just quoted Star Wars and I do think George Lucas is a frickin’ genius. The way he plotted the whole storyline, “Luke, I am your father.” Boom! Mind Boggled.  What is George Lucas? A genius.

Anyways, back to the topic.

Lately I’ve been finding a table in Panera across the street from my apartment to get some writing done, which leads me here.

I am sitting in the corner with my headphones on and no music playing because Pandora isn’t functioning, a cup of hazelnut coffee, and an ‘Everything’ bagel with cream cheese – I can hear the conversation next to me between a group of women.

As I sit here being niele (nosey in Hawaiian), I am inspired by their conversation to give you 8 reasons why you will not reach your fitness goals.  But before I begin, I need some music because I’m still sitting here with no music.  Come on Mumford & Sons.

Okay, now I’m ready.

Yes it’s summer and people are either still working, achieved, or gave up on their beach body.  If you are still working, keep it up because it’s all about creating a new lifestyle and that takes time.  If you achieved it, solid! Internet high five! Seriously…And if you gave up, hopefully this list will help you recognize where things went wrong.

8 REASONS WHY YOU WILL FAIL

1.  YOU DON’T BELIEVE IN YOURSELF.  Remember the teaching of Master Yoda.  It is essential for you to believe that you can achieve.  You can be your best supporter and your worst enemy, it all depends on how you speak to yourself.  When you make your goals think of the larger purpose why you want to achieve them.  Maybe it’s to build more confidence, you want to set a positive example for your family, you want to look damn sexy (that can be a goal), your family has a history of heart diseases (that’s part of my purpose), and the list can go on.

2.  YOU MAKE TOO MANY EXCUSES. I’m too tired.  I’m too busy.  It’s too early. I have no time.  It’s too hard.  The Voice is on.  The gym is too crowded. I think you get the point.  Leave no room for excuses.  If you are making excuses, you may need to make changes to a few life habits.  You can’t wake up to go for that morning run, maybe you should go to sleep earlier.  Small changes can create a positive affect.

“If you don’t like something, change it.  If you can’t change it, change your attitude” – unknown

3.  YOU LACK ACCOUNTABILITY.  Since excuses get thrown around as much as new fad diets come out, who is going to keep you accountable? Who’s going to be there to give you a swift kick in the ass to get back on the path? This is where a mentor, or just a solid training partner.

4.  YOU HAVE NO SUPPORT.  It’s hard when you want to achieve something that means a lot to you but receive no support.  You are given a hard time when you want to eat healthier, when you workout all the time – people look at you like a meat-head, you decided to stay home because you have a training session the next morning and are thought of as a flake or anti-social.  Make sure you have support which leads me to the next point.

5.  YOU SURROUND YOURSELF WITH THE WRONG PEOPLE.  When you have a goal, it is essential to surround yourself with positive and supportive people.  If the group you hang out with are constantly going out drinking, don’t workout much, get on your case for trying to change, make fun of you when you order something healthy at a restaurant, or think you are being ridiculous with your new goal, it may be time to cut the fat.  To read more about the importance of ridding negative people check out this post: Cut the Fat Transform Your Life.

6..  YOU DON’T KNOW WHERE TO START.  You have your goal and you are ready to crush it, but something is holding you back – where do you start? You’ve been exercising, making a point to eat healthier, but aren’t seeing the results you want.  This is where you need some guidance and a mentor to point you in the right direction.  The best way to achieve a goal is finding someone who has done it.  I’m here to help you, if you need any assistance – you know where to find me.

7.  YOU ARE NOT PATIENT.  Like the saying goes, “Nothing great ever came easy.” Don’t expect over night success.  When we see those who have achieved great things, we don’t see all the struggles and obstacles they had to overcome in order to get there.  You have to persevere, be persistant, and constantly believe in yourself.  I believe if you follow my 3 D’s: Determination, Dedication, and Discipline- you will accomplish what you set out for.

8.  YOU ARE JUST LAZY.  Now I don’t want to end this post on a negative note, but this is probably one of the most important ones.  Obviously you are reading this because you feel you don’t know where you have gone wrong.  You have to realize that it won’t come automatic.  Personal growth, self discovery, and life doesn’t just happen automatically.  You must be intentional and proactive.  There are areas in my life where I need to be more intentional and I’ve come to terms that I’m lazy in those areas and need to make changes.  You may have to as well.

FINAL THOUGHTS

As I wrote this, it was obvious that not only can these 8 reasons cause you to fail on your fitness goals, it can actually be used in every aspect of life; family, career, finances, relationships, spirituality, and everything else.

That’s the great thing about building a KU body – it’s becoming the best version of YOU there is.

Mahalo. Aloha. A hui hou!
